Skyline Terrace is a community of 100 efficiency apartments for individuals with annual incomes of $24,900 or less. Developed and owned by Foundation Communities, a local nonprofit organization, Skyline Terrace offers residents community meeting spaces, a relaxing courtyard and services to promote self-sufficiency. Residents began moving in April 2008.

Rents range from $373 to $498, with lower rents for residents in the Passages program. Passages will serve 15 formerly homeless persons. Clients and case workers work intensively to achieve financial independence and permanent stable housing. Passages is a collaboration of the Housing Authority of the City of Austin, the Salvation Army and Foundation Communities.

Darrel had a successful career in the machine tool industry until his life took a dive into depression and alcoholism. Eventually, he was faced with the choice of shooting himself or calling for help, and Darrel chose to pick up the phone.

After completing a rehabilitation program, Darrel became one of the first to move into Garden Terrace, an apartment community providing permanent, affordable housing and help with health care, employment, and other needs. Darrel has taken college classes, dealt with health issues, and is working again. He calls Garden Terrace “a godsend” that has given him a second chance at life, and he wants to see it expand to help others.
