What Makes Us Unique
Housing Plus Services
It takes more than a roof over your head to make your dreams come true. We help families end the cycle of poverty through on-site programs that increase literacy and financial stability. Our Community Learning Centers, located right in the center of the community, are open daytime and evenings providing free services like a computer lab, pre-school class, after-school programs, teen clubs and ESL classes.
Business-like Nonprofit Model
"With about 80% of revenue coming from operations, Foundation Communities has a business-like approach that makes it easy for my foundation to invest."
—Alan Topfer, Topfer Family Foundation
- Foundation Communities is among the top 15 nonprofits in Austin, ranked by total revenue, and among the top 10, ranked by total assets.
- With real estate holdings valued at more than $67 million and a $4 million capital fund, we are fortunate to have a solid base of success on which to build.
Commitment to Sustainability
Whether it's helping an individual family overcome homelessness and become self-sustaining — or using building practices that promote environmental sustainability, we believe in investing in what works best over the long haul. Sometimes it costs more on the front end, but our experience shows committing resources now for the future is just plain smart.
Green Building Leader
For the past 10 years, we've invested in green building initiatives to save on operating costs, reduce residents' utility bills and because it makes Austin a better place to raise our kids — and grand kids. Sometimes green building is a roof covered with solar panels, and sometimes it's as simple as replacing carpet with ceramic tile.
Founded nearly twenty years ago by University of Texas grads, Foundation Communities is a home-grown organization. Our staff, board and volunteers are passionate about live music, good Tex-Mex and the notion that everyone in Austin should have a nice place to live they can afford near good jobs and schools.
Feels Like Home
Whether it's building the first affordable housing west of Mo-Pac or choosing apartment designs that fit families' needs, our apartments don't feel "affordable." They feel like home.
We're a national leader in the asset-building movement, offering low-income families and individuals a step up into the economic mainstream through financial education and homebuyer courses, matched savings accounts, financial coaching, finding money for education, self-employed/small business support and free income tax preparation.
With 1/3 of our board members current or previous affordable housing residents, we offer volunteer and training opportunities for affordable housing residents to build their community and gain valuable skills.
Solutions with Measurable Impact
At the end of the day, we measure what matters: occupancy rates, turnover rate, residents' income, children's report cards and readings scores, resident satisfaction and other indicators of success.
