Donors Gina and Marty Richardson

Gina & Marty Richardson

When her kids grew up and left home, Gina began looking for something meaningful to do with her time. Inspired by an article she read about a CPA in Chicago helping low-income people file their tax returns, Gina, an accountant herself, began looking for an organization doing this work. That's when she learned about Foundation Communities' Community Tax Centers and joined us as a tax center volunteer.

Soon Gina joined the board of directors and learned more about the day-to-day operations of a nonprofit. "Then Hurricane Katrina happened. And that was a major turning point," Gina remembers. Gina and her husband Marty helped children get vaccinations and register for school and made sure furniture, food, clothing and friendship reached those in need. Along the way, the couple made several donations.

Soon after, when Gina was having a "big birthday," Marty had a hard time figuring out how to mark the occasion. A family member reminded him of Foundation Communities. On her big day, he gave her a card that informed her he'd created an endowment in her honor.

"For Marty to do this was overwhelming for me," says Gina, "It's not like we have money just lying around." But for Marty, it seemed like a natural fit. The couple believes in providing the basics-food, shelter and a quality education-so people can succeed on their own. "Put some door knobs on the door and let them walk through it," adds Marty.
