Volunteer Story: Bill Simmons
"My formative years, in the late 1950's, were in profound poverty. My mother, who grew up in poverty as well, attempted to raise nine of us by working odd jobs. We subsided on donations from churches, when they had support to offer and even on a local grocery store owner. During the holidays, the welfare department in Fort Worth opened their doors to a food pantry as well. I spent most of my preteen and early teen years in orphanages and foster homes. "
"Had there been a 'Foundation Communities' program in Fort Worth at that time, I am sure we would have qualified and maybe that would have been the boost we needed to stay intact as a family, but there wasn't. I am privileged to play a very tiny role in providing for those who cannot provide for themselves. When I see the smiling faces of the children at Foundation Communities, I see lives that can be changed forever with just a little kindness. Thank you for the chance to help end the cycle of poverty."
